Brian Avants

biography

Background: Physics/Math, Computer Science, Bioengineering.

My doctoral research focused on image normalization and understanding populations of anatomy/shape through the deformations between them. Statistics on these spaces are important for understanding the complexities of normal and pathological neuroanatomy and physiology. We are only beginning to understand the in vivo brain. My current research focus is on:

  • Longitudinal change in neurodegenerative disease
  • The role of structural lesions in the brain on behavior and brain function
  • Retinotopic mapping
  • Hippocampus segmentation using normalization
  • Diffeomorphic normalization models, the sub-group of Diff relevant for anatomy and shape statistics in Diff
